How Dry Eye Disease Develops & How to Treat It

man with dry eye sneeze

Dry eye disease is an increasingly common eye condition that can happen either because the eye is not producing enough tears, or because tears are evaporating too quickly, leaving the eyes without enough moisture to function comfortably.

This can happen for several reasons including allergies, side effects from medications, hormonal changes, and illness.

Depending on the cause and exact symptoms of your dry eyes, our Exton eye doctors will be able to prescribe treatments and medications aimed at increasing the amount of tears your eye produces and/or slowing the evaporation of tears to better hydrate your eyes.

What Are the Main Causes of Dry Eye?

  • Aging

Dry eye disease tends to affect people over the age of 50. This is because tear production slows as we age. As the lacrimal glands produce fewer tears, dry eye develops.

  • Hormonal changes

It's not uncommon for some women to experience dry eye symptoms during pregnancy, menopause, or while using birth control pills. That's because hormone imbalances can reduce tear production.

  • Autoimmune disease

Certain autoimmune diseases, like Sjögren’s syndrome, can cause white blood cells to attack your tear glands, thus reducing tear production. Other diseases like arthritis, lupus, and diabetes can also cause poor or insufficient tear production.

  • Medications

Certain medications can reduce mucus production (one of the 3 tear components) thus contributing to chronic dry eye.

They include antihistamines, antidepressants, diuretics, and beta-blockers.

Note that this is just a handful of causes. There are many other factors that can contribute to dry eye, including pollution and dry air, allergies, poor tear quality, dehydration, contact lens wear, and more.

Dry Eyes FAQs

Can I still wear contact lenses if I have dry eye syndrome?

Yes, some people can still wear contact lenses with dry eye syndrome. However, depending on its severity, you may need to carefully select the adequate contact lens for optimal clarity and comfort.

Oftentimes, because contact lenses sit on the eye, it's difficult for vital oxygen to reach the eye. This can worsen dry eye symptoms, and increase the risk of scratching or otherwise damaging your eye. Make sure to ask your eye doctor which contact lenses are most adapted to your condition.

Can dry eye syndrome be cured?

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for dry eye syndrome. There are, however, many treatment options that offer lasting dry eye relief.

Can dry eye syndrome cause blindness?

In rare extreme cases, dry eye syndrome can cause corneal ulcers. These ulcers can result in scarring on the eye, making it difficult for the cornea to focus light accurately. If left untreated, corneal ulcers and the associated scarring can result in blindness.

How can I prevent dry eye symptoms?

Below are a few tips that will help prevent dry eye symptoms:

  • Point fans, heaters, and air vents so that they don’t directly blow into your eyes
  • Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids
  • Stay properly hydrated
  • Take breaks during long tasks, especially those that require extended visual focus

I'm somewhat astounding by the service and staff of Clopus Reto and Halscheid. I'm new to the Downin... gtown area. I'd been putting off an eye exam for way too long. I'm going into my sixties, had a couple of serious issues with vitreous detachment/retinal tear about 4 yrs ago. I was ok after surgery but had not been seen (no pun intended) by anyone since that time. I chose Clopus Reto Halscheid after my internet search. There were alot of choices. I'm so glad I chose this group. Appointments online made it very easy. I received a response right away. Once there for my appointment, I was greeted with a courteous, friendly staff. Paperwork was a breeze and I was able to get checked in quickly. Jaime was my tech person taking care of me with preliminary testing, scans. She made me feel super at ease. Dr Penny was amazing. Very thorough. She answered all of my questions and made it very easy to understand the information. I had a great eye exam with Dr. Penny and felt I was in expert care. They highlighted my benefits I could put towards a pair of glasses. Needed readers at this time. Lady (sorry, name?) that assisted me with my selection was wonderful. Huge selection of options in eyewear. I now have a new pair of reader sunglasses that I'm so happy with. Able to pick them up ahead of time provided. I highly recommend this group for all your vision care. Well done!

During my annual eye exam on 5/21/25, my O.D. [and part time super sleuth], Dr. Jillian Penney, of C... RH Vision found a hole in my retina not previously seen / nor reported. Dr. Penney , working together with Dr. Ward and the team at Chester County Eye Care Assoc were fabulous. The two EXTRAORDINARY customer service teams were able to make room an appointment for me with one of ChesCo Eye Assoc premier Retinal Specialists, Dr. Michael J. Ward for 1:30. For context, the hole was discovered at about 11:45. Dr. Ward and his team were wonderful to work with, just as Dr. Penney’s team had been! Dr.Ward et al, were Laser-focused on my wHOLE problem [puns intended] Listened intently, not easy with my vocal cord paresis weakened voice They worked as “Fast and Furious” as excellent medical care delivery allowed, Dr. Ward confirmed the hole, explained the options, likely cause and ramifications if left untreated. It was a no-brainer. Off to the laser room I went (much to my wife’s surprise) seeking treatment that quite likely would be saving my vision, especially compared to a do-nothing-decision. In about 5 minutes (though it felt more like 15!), Dr Ward had lasered the hole closed! By 2:30, I was on my way home with one less hole in my head. PHEW, make that a double PHEW for me please. As one of my wise beyond-her-years daughters astutely noted “that was better and faster service than a drive thru …” FOR SURE! Vin Diesel and Paul Walker would have been mightily impressed, I am certain! Fingers crossed none of you ever gets to enjoy so much fun but, just in case, it’s very comforting to know there are still people and organizations that think like this, act like this and deliver results like this! My sincere gratitude! J P FOOTNOTE: size is IN THE EYE of the beholder. To wit, A “little hole” is what happens to the proverbial “you”, no matter the actual size, ANY extra holes in MY head are MAMMOTH!’ 😂🤷‍♂️🤣

I'd been having a problem with painful and recurring styes (4 in 6 months, two of which landed me in... the emergency room) and was getting nowhere with other eye doctors to get to the root cause. Dr. Penney spent time with me, listening, diagnosing, and making a game plan when everyone else had just thrown expensive drops at me and told me to call if it came back. Not only is the doctor great, but the front desk is fantastic, too. When I called for an urgent appointment, they got me right in. And when I showed up for the appointment, they were so friendly and welcoming. I should have come here a long time ago!
